Want to make infused treats at home? Start by making your own canna-butter. All you need is a grinder, cannabis, butter, and some common household items!
All baking starts with science. In order to make canna-butter, you first need to decarb your cannabis. Decarboxylation activates the cannabinoids in cannabis so that you can get high.
When you smoke or vape cannabis, the extremely high temperatures immediately activate the cannabinoids, which are then instantly absorbed into your body through inhalation.
Decarboxylation sounds like a complicated process, but it’s actually quite simple.
Place your cannabis in an oven-safe container and then tightly seal it with a folded sheet of aluminum foil.
Bake the cannabis at 245 F or 118 C for 30 to 40 minutes. This is when the decarboxylation process happens. During the decarboxylation process, high temperatures convert tetrahydrocannabinol acid (THCA) into tetrahydrocannabinol, which is the cannabinoid that gets you high. Without the removal of the acid chain during decarboxylation, you wouldn’t be able to get high.
Next, grind up your decarbed cannabis. Melt butter and water on low heat, then add your cannabis. Simmer for 2 to 3 hours, remembering to stir occasionally. You can also follow the same steps but add the butter, water, and cannabis to a crock pot. Set it to around 160 F and let it heat for about 3 hours.
Strain the cannabis matter from your canna-butter using a cheesecloth or an old cotton t-shirt. Place the freshly-squeezed canna-butter in the fridge to cool. Enjoy it mixed into your favorite dishes and desserts. If excess water separates from the butter, simply pour it off.
